Glass Balustrading

Care & Maintenance

It is important to care for and maintain your new stainless steel and glass products, to ensure that they maintain their aesthetic look and continue to look brand new. This page will provide you with information about stainless steel and glass materials, including how to care and maintain them.

What is Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is not a single alloy, but rather the name applies to a group of iron-based alloys containing a minimum 10.5% chromium. Other elements are added and the chromium content increased to improve the corrosion resistance and heat resisting properties, enhance mechanical properties, and/or improve fabricating characteristics.

Goodline Stainless uses two grades of stainless steel for all stainless steel balustrade which are fabricated and installed according to strict regulations of the prestigious Australian Stainless Steel Development Association (ASSDA).

Goodline Stainless specially sources its stainless steel from reputable suppliers within Australia and overseas. The two grades we use are:

  • 316 - which offers more corrosion-resistance through the addition of molybdenum than lower grades. This grade is desirable where the possibility of severe corrosion exists, such as heavy industrial atmospheres and marine environments.
  • 316L – which has the benefits of 316 grade, however it also has a low carbon content, which means that it is more resistant to the tea-staining effect that can occur near marine environments.

Care and maintenance of stainless steel

To achieve maximum corrosion resistance, the surface of the stainless steel must be kept clean. Maintenance is necessary as surface contamination and the formation of deposits are critical factors which may lead to reduced life. These contaminants may be minute particles of iron or rust from other non-stainless steels used in nearby construction and not subsequently removed. Industrial, commercial, domestic and naturally occurring atmospheric conditions can result in deposits which can corrode stainless steel products. Salt deposits from marine conditions can cause stainless steel to corrode we therefore recommend the following ongoing maintenance:

  • Complete wash down of all stainless steel including fittings using a soft sponge and a mild detergent or soap mixed with warm water. This can then be followed by a clean water rinse. An enhanced appearance can be achieved if the cleaned surface is finally wiped dry with a soft lint free cloth.
  • Ensure the stainless steel is protected during construction
  • Recommended schedule: to be carried out every 3 months

Glass (toughened)

Toughened glass needs care and maintenance to function at full capacity. The following maintenance and cleaning tips are provided to help you prevent permanent damage and maximise the performance of the glass installed. It is suggested that a check and clean should be conducted every six months for clean environments and approximately every three months for grimy, waterfront and or coastal environments.

The most important part of glass cleaning is taking care not to scratch the surface. Improper cleaning can cause permanent damage to the pane. Specific advice on the cleaning of glass should always be sought from a reputable glazier or professional window cleaner before any glass cleaning is undertaken. Professional window cleaners have significant experience and access to specialist equipment, materials and methods. We therefore recommend the following ongoing maintenance:

  • Use detergents and cleaning solutions that specifically state they are safe for glass cleaning
  • Ensure Glass is protected during construction
  • Recommended schedule: to be carried out every 3 months minimum
